It takes just one look. One look away from Your unfailing love to change the course of a life. Heavenly Father, I hear about it. I see it. It’s everywhere—even in the lives of Your followers. Adultery is tearing families apart.
David, Your chosen king, Your anointed one, was no exception. One glance at Bathsheba, and he had to find out who she was. He simply had to have her. And the rest history— adultery, an innocent man’s death, and the loss of David and Bathsheba’s child. A life in chaos.
Heavenly Father, when I think about the story of adultery, I have to go back to where sin started—the garden of Eden. Adam and Eve took their eyes off Your love and protection and were enticed to choose something hyped up to be better than You. Oh, the deception!
From there Your children, the Israelites, time and time again committed adultery against You—choosing the love of idols and pagan worship over Your love. And I, too, know that if I do not seek You, Your wisdom and love, I could fall into the same deception that would bring chaos into my life.
You are our one true love. And Satan, who targets our souls, looks for our weaknesses and uses them to tempt us to destroy our spiritual walk with You. Out of his deception we develop adulterous hearts! But You, God, are forgiving and loving to those who repent and seek after Your heart. Your truth tells me, I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more (Hebrews 8:12).
You know that Your children are not perfect—that we will fail if we take our eyes off of the One who paid the price for our sins, Jesus. I want to become one with You and righteous in Your sight. I will be faithful to my true love—You.
Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion. Hebrews 3:15
