The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.Exodus 33:11

Why do I feel as though others have a special bond with You, God? Why do others seem to experience You, Jesus, in a more intimate way? I marvel at their spiritual awareness.

The Israelites in Moses’s day must have felt the same way as they watched Moses walk into the tent of meeting, where he met with the You, Lord, prior to the building of the tabernacle. The Bible says that all the people watched from their tents and worshiped You from afar, while You spoke to Moses face to face—talking to him as one would to a close friend. But Joshua was different. He was not content to worship You from a distance, but stayed right outside the tent. Even when Moses returned to the camp, Moses’s young aide Joshua did not leave the tent. Perhaps he was guarding the tent. Perhaps he simply could not get enough of You.

I long to be closer to You, too, Lord. I don’t need to stand at a distance, only wishing I knew You better. I can follow Joshua’s lead and go boldly into Your presence through the blood of Christ. I can hear from You firsthand as You reveal Your heart to me through Your Word. Then I can go out to the rest of the watching world and tell them about Your message of love, grace and forgiveness.
